Opening night also includes the New York premiere of Basil Twist's production of Respighi's La bella dormente nel bosco with the Gotham Chamber Opera and the Westminster Festival Choir.
This summer's premieres include the U.S. premiere of I La Galigo, a retelling of the Indonesian creation myth through music, dance, theater, and poetry; the work, featuring an all-Indonesian cast, is directed by Robert Wilson.
Shen Wei Dance Arts will present a world-premiere work, along with the New York premiere of Near the Terrace Part I, set to music by Arvo P‹rt.
Shadowtime, Brian Ferneyhough's opera based on the life of philosopher Walter Benjamin, will have its U.S. premiere at the festival. The opera's libretto is by poet Charles Bernstein, and the performance features the Nieuw Ensemble Amsterdam and Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart.
Other highlights this year include dance performances by Javanese court-dancer Mugiyono Kasdio; My Life as a Fairy Tale, a musical play about the life of Hans Christian Anderson, directed by Chen Shi-Zheng and with music by Stephin Merritt; and a hip-hop concert headlined by Wyclef Jean.
The three-week festival runs July 12-31.
