CHICAGO -- Ricky Jay finally got some competition. Sleight of Hand: A Magician's Diary, a new work from City Lit Theatre at Chicago Cultural Center Studio, opens Mar. 16.

Will Tremonte's one-man show, a homegrown look at the world of magic, traces his family's career in magic from the 19th century to the mid-1930s.

Tremonte -- a magician, mentalist, memory expert and raconteur, as well as winner of the International Magic Award (the Oscar of illusionist kudos) -- tells how his father grew up at 546 DeKoven St., site of the Great Chicago fire.

Taking his inspiration from that hot spot, Tremonte says, his father continued the family tradition of legerdemain and prestidigitation. Those arts were first taught to the Tremontes by a band of old-country gypsies.
