LAGUNA BEACH, CA -- The southern California premiere of the thriller, The Woman in Black, starts Feb. 23 at Laguna Playhouse. Weeks ago, the show, running to March 21, was chosen as a replacement for As Bees in Honey Drown, which was postponed to the 1999-2000 season, owing to "artistic complications," said the Playhouse's executive director Richard Stein.

The Woman in Black is a long-running hit in London, adapted by Stephen Mallatratt from a book by Susan Hill. "In it, a long grieving lawyer believes a curse has been placed on the family by the specter of the woman in black," reads a company relase. "In an attempt to exorcise her spirit, he engages a skeptical young actor to help him recount his story. His plan begins innocently enough, but soon the border between reality and fantasy blurs."

The Playhouse's artistic director, Andrew Barnicle, directs.
