It's V-Day at the Apollo! Film stars Salma Hayek and Rosie Perez, TV's Phylicia Rashad and musical theatre's Rita Moreno, LaChanze and Tonya Pinkins will perform in a special Vagina Monologues benefit March 30 at the Apollo Theatre in Harlem. Readings of The Vagina Monologues, Eve Ensler's contemplation of women's relationship to the title's bit of anatomy, have been popular Valentine's Day events since 1998 when the first benefit was held to help end violence against women and girls. The Harlem V-Day will donate proceeds to The African American Task Force on Violence Against Women, The Violence Intervention Program, The Dominican Women's Development Center and Sakhi.
Also participating in the celeb-heavy performance will be Mary Alice, model Naomi Campbell, singer Kim Coles, Roasrio Dawson, Sully Diaz, Ensler, Takayo Fischer, Cynthia Garrett, Broadway and Off-Broadway actress Hazelle Goodman, Denyce Graves, TV's LisaGay Hamilton, scholar bell hooks, Sanaa Lathan, Joie Lee, Angie Martinez, Tamara Tunie, Lauren Velez, Lorraine Velez, Kerry Washington and Lynn Whitfeld. Featured musical artists are Faith Evans, Amel Larrieux, Sweet Honey in the Rock and Eddie Torres Latin Dance Company.
