News Mary Henderson Discusses Classic Tome "The City and the Theater" Sept. 8 Author and historian Mary Henderson will discuss her classic study of New York theatre, "The City and the Theater," at 6 PM Sept. 8 at Manhattan's Drama Book Shop.

The full title of the volume is "The City and the Theater, The History of New York Playhouses: A 250 Year Journey from Bowling Green to Times Square." In its pages, Henderson examines theatre life—and the lives of theatres—in New York City, from the early colonial days of the John Street Theatre and the Park Theatre, to the rowdy playhouses of the Bowery to the northward march of the theatrical district from Union Square to Madison Square to Herald Square and, finally, Times Square. The new edition is published by Backstage Books.

Henderson was a longtime curator of the theatre collection at the Museum of the City of New York. Her other books include "Broadway Ballyhoo" and "The New Amsterdam: The Biography of a Broadway Theatre."

The Drama Book Shop is located at 250 W. 40th St. The event is free.
