The Young Vic is reviving Max Frisch's Andorra, which was last seen at the National Theatre in 1964.
Heading the cast will be Jack Shepherd, former star of the mystery television series Wycliffe. The production is being directed by Gregory Thompson, with design by Francis O'Connor and lighting by Paule Constable.
Frisch, a Swiss-born playwright, wrote this post-war piece as an attempt to come to terms with the rise of fascism in Europe. Andorra explores the terrible consequences of prejudices and of anti-Semitism in particular. The action takes place in Andorra, but could as easily occur anywhere in Europe.
Enemies gather at the border of Andorra and the people are forced to confront the sins of the past. The people can either continue to lie or stand up for what is true.
The Young Vic's production of Andorra will run from 19th October to 10th November 2001, with the Press Night on 23rd October.
