Robinson Jeffers' freely-adapted version of Medea, the Euripides revenge tragedy, opens June 28 at the Stratford Festival's Tom Patterson Theatre, following previews that began June 6.

Medea is the sorceress who is betrayed by Jason, the husband whose life she saved in his search for the Golden Fleece. Her unthinkable revenge has echoed over the centuries, since the story was first told in 431 BC.

Jeffers' adaptation premiered at the National Theatre in New York City in 1947 and ran for 27 weeks with Judith Anderson in the title role.

Miles Potter directs a company that includes Robert Benson (Creon), Patricia Collins, John Dolan (Aegeus), Aaron Franks, Michelle Giroux, Bernard Hopkins, Rita Howell, Andrew Linley, Seana McKenna (Medea), Kate Trotter and Scott Wentworth (Jason).

Designers are Peter Hartwell (set and costumes), Scott Henderson (lighting), Michael Becker (sound and music). Performances continue in repertory through Oct. 1.
