Will Hedwig get a Globe Jan. 20?

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association smiled on John Cameron Mitchell's performance in the film, "Hedwig and the Angry Inch," handing him a 2002 Golden Globe Award nomination in December, and on Jan. 20 the world will see if the the Globes are ready to embrace an almost-transgendered German rocker.

Mitchell, who created and starred in the Off-Broadway rock musical about furstrated Hedwig, was nommed in the Globe category of Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture-Musical or Comedy. "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" is now on DVD and video. His competition includes Gene Hackman ("The Royal Tenenbaums"), Hugh Jackman ("Kate & Leopold"), Ewan McGregor ("Moulin Rouge") and Billy Bob Thornton ("Bandits").

The Baz Luhrmann post-modern film musical, "Moulin Rouge," earned a Best Motion Picture-Musical or Comedy nom, an acting nom for Nicole Kidman (who was also nommed for "The Others" in the drama category) and for Best Director for Luhrmann (who is preparing his hip, Italian-language version of La Boheme for Broadway in the coming season).

Other theatre-related names nominated for the annual awards, which celebrate both TV and film, include: Maggie Smith ("Gosford Park"), Helen Mirren ("Gosford Park"), Jude Law ("Artificial Intelligence"), Judi Dench ("Iris"), Kevin Spacey ("The Shipping News"), Edie Falco ("The Sopranos"), Sarah Jessica Parker ("Sex and the City"), Emma Thompson ("Wit," which was nommed for Best Miniseries or Motion Picture Made for TV), Judy Davis ("Me and My Shadows: Life With Judy Garland," which was nommed for Best Miniseries or Motion Picture Made for TV), Allison Janney ("The West Wing"), Megan Mullaley ("Will & Grace").
