Under the proposal, a previous plan to build a C$280 million complex on the ‹lot Balmoral would be shelved. Instead, the government would carry out a relatively inexpensive C$64 million renovation of the Th_ê¢tre Maisonneuve, expanding the auditorium's capacity from 1,400 to 2,000 and improving the acoustics.
The MSO's 3,000-seat Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier‹which has never been considered an acoustical success‹would then be available for performances by l'Opera de Montreal and les Grand Ballets Canadiens.
Unlike the previous plan, the renovation would not cost taxpayers anything. According to La Press, the Quebec government plans to create a public-private partnership in which a developer will renovate the Th_ê¢tre Maisonneuve in exchange for a 99-year lease on the unused land on the ‹lot Balmoral.
