The small-cast romantic musical comedy by lyricist-librettist-composer Jeremy Desmon has been seen in regional productions. The title refers to the idealized stock photo of a woman in a store-bought picture frame, and how she comes to life to impose on a loving couple.
"A tricky situation turns comical when a young couple's fantasies come to life," according to the Goodspeed announcement. "As they choose between the real and ideal, each discovers true love in this fast-paced musical comedy."
Originally presented in 1999 as part of Goodspeed's inaugural residency in association with New York University's Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program, The Girl in the Frame was further developed at the Theatre Building Chicago, the Bridewell Theatre in London and the Stoneham Theatre in Boston. The Girl in the Frame was presented at the National Alliance for Musical Theatre's 16th Annual Festival of New Musicals in October 2004.
Writer-composer Jeremy Desmon is a recent Jonathan Larson Fellow at the Dramatists Guild. His productions also include It's Not You…It's Me (Seattle Fringe Festival) and Cabin Pressure (NYC's Turnip Theatre Festival). His musical adaptation of the new children’s classic If You Give a Mouse a Cookie will begin touring the country this fall with Theaterworks/USA.
A cast and creative team will be announced. The 2005 season at The Norma Terris Theatre also includes the new musical Flight of the Lawnchair Man, now through June 12, and Amour, Aug. 11-Sept. 4. Because of their "developmental" nature, shows at the Norma Terris are not open to review.
On Goodspeed's mainstage at the Goodspeed Opera House in East Haddam, CT, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, plays through June 26; Sandy Wilson's The Boy Friend, directed by Julie Andrews, runs July 8-Sept. 18 (prior to a national tour); and Abyssinia appears Sept. 30-Dec. 4.
