TheatreWorks artistic director Robert Kelley stages the world-premiere production that began previews Dec. 1 and will continue through Dec. 26. Two additional performances have been added on Dec. 23 at 2 PM and Dec. 24 at 7 PM.

Based on Truman Capote's sepia-hued memoir of his childhood, A Christmas Memory has a score by Grossman (Minnie's Boys, Snoopy!, A Doll's Life), lyrics by Hall (The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas) and a book by screenwriter Duane Poole, who also penned the 1997 teleplay of Capote's short story.

Tony Award nominee Penny Fuller (Dividing the Estate, A New Brain) portrays Aunt Sook, opposite young, Bay Area actor Gabriel Hoffman as Buddy. The cast also includes Eileen Barnett, Jennifer Chapman, Richard Farrell, Joshua Park and Cathleen Riddley.

TheatreWorks describes the musical as "a wistful memoir of cherished youth, chronicling a young boy's loving friendship with an eccentric aunt in a small Southern town in the 1930s, where misfits Buddy and Sook launch kites, haunt speakeasies, and mail fruitcakes to everyone from Jean Harlow to President Roosevelt."

Grossman penned the music to Minnie's Boys, Goodtime Charley, A Doll's Life and Grind. Hall is best known for the score to The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. Poole also penned the 1997 made-for-television adaptation of "A Christmas Memory."  Orchestrations are by Steve Orich.

The musical adaptation of A Christmas Memory received a stage reading in March 2010 by The Human Race Theatre Company in Dayton, OH, and had developmental workshops at TheatreWorks in May and September 2010.
