Payne's other plays at the Royal Court include Constellations, which subsequently transferred to the West End's Duke of York's Theatre, and Wanderlust. Other credits include Incognito at High Tide Festival, Blurred Lines at the Shed at the National Theatre, The Same Deep Water As Me at the Donmar Warehouse and If There Is I Haven’t Found It Yet at the Bush Theatre (subsequently produced by Roundabout Theatre Company at Off-Broadway's Laura Pels Theatre). The Art of Dying is described in press materials as a play about death, dying and the deceased, and a mix of fact and fiction: "I ask her what’s happening, what’s going on; he doesn’t seem to be getting any better? ‘Yes, your father is extremely poorly.’ The word ‘poorly’ strikes me as an odd choice. A cat with a cold is poorly; I was under the impression my dad was dying."
