The Emelin Theatre of Mamaroneck, New York will host the American debut of The Mysterious Mr. Love from July 13-23. Karoline Leach’s new play is set in 1912, where Mr. George Love comes across as a charming, polite diplomat. However, his ruse is just a cover, as he is a fortune hunter, looking for vulnerable young women to marry so he can steal their treasures. Adelaide Pinchin appears as just another victim, but things get interesting when George genuinely falls in love with her.
The play is part romance and part romantic thriller. It marks the American debut of the production. The show was first presented by Bill Kenwright at London’s Comedy Theatre under the direction of Bob Tomson, August 7 1997.
Playing at the Emelin Theatre in Mamaroneck, it is produced in association with the Penguin Repertory Theatre in Stony Point. The Penguin Repertory Theatre’s Artistic director, Joe Brancato, serves as the director. Performing the two roles of Mr. Love and Adelaide are Brent Harris and Ann Dowd, respectively. The technical staff includes Jeffery Nellis (lighting design), Bob Auld (sound design), Daryl A. Stone (costume design), and Matthew Maraffi (set design). The dialect coach was Charlotte Fleck.
