The summer season will also include Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's Tony Award-winning musical Into the Woods, which made its world premiere at The Old Globe in 1986, prior to its Broadway staging. Re-imaged by Fiasco Theater, Into the Woods will be directed by Noah Brody and Ben Steinfeld in a production that originated at McCarter Theatre Center.
The lineup will also include Ronald Harwood's comedy Quartet, directed by Richard Seer.
"I am happy to present to San Diego and our entire region a slate of summertime offerings that includes something for everyone," Edelstein said in a statement. "The artists who will bring these works to life are a stunningly talented group and I’m thrilled to welcome them to the Globe. I am honored to be making my Old Globe Shakespeare Festival directorial debut, all the more so because I will do it alongside master Shakespearean director and Globe alumnus Mark Lamos, whose work I truly admire."
The season-at-a-glance follows:
Lowell Davies Festival Theatre Othello
By William Shakespeare
June 22, 2014–July 27
"Old Globe artistic director Barry Edelstein makes his debut on the Globe's outdoor stage with one of Shakespeare's greatest tragedies. Despite the prejudices in Venice, the brilliant general Othello excels both on the battlefield and in the halls of state. But when he marries Desdemona, his envious lieutenant Iago sets in motion a diabolical plan to destroy him. Edelstein gives us a riveting, intense, and intimate production where poetry soars and swords clash, where true love and wrenching jealousy collide."
The Two Gentlemen of Verona
By William Shakespeare
Aug. 10–Sept. 14
"Renowned director and Tony Award nominee Mark Lamos returns to the Globe with one of Shakespeare's most delightful and boisterous comedies. Best friends Valentine and Proteus travel to the big city to seek their fortunes, only to find themselves rivals, both madly in love with the beautiful Silvia, daughter of Milan's most powerful duke."

Into the Woods
Music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim
Book by James Lapine
July 12–Aug. 10
"One of the greatest musicals of all time returns in triumph to its birthplace, nearly three decades after its world premiere at The Old Globe, in an inventive new production from the critically acclaimed Fiasco Theater that originated at McCarter Theatre Center. Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's Tony Award-winning masterpiece weaves together beloved fairy tales, then ventures into the unknown territory of life after 'happily ever after.' Directors Noah Brody and Ben Steinfeld conjure a mythical world of theatrical invention where an ordinary rope becomes Jack's famous beanstalk, a ladder becomes Rapunzel's enchanted tower, and the power of transformation creates a beguiling theatre of the imagination."

Quartet
By Ronald Harwood
July 25–Aug. 24
"From the author of The Dresser comes an uplifting comedy recently made into a major motion picture. Three former opera singers, Reginald, Cecily, and Wilfred, lead a harmonious existence at a home for retired musicians — until Reginald's ex-wife, grande dame Jean Horton, arrives. As long-ago grudges surface and old scores are settled, the quartet heads back into the rehearsal room for one final encore."
