News Olivier Winner Paul Clarkson to Direct the London Professional Premiere of The Dreaming Paul Clarkson, who won an Olivier Award for starring in the original 1984 London premiere of Howard Goodall’s The Hired Man, is to now direct the London professional premiere of Goodall and Charles Hart’s 2001 musical The Dreaming, beginning performances Sept. 3 at the Union Theatre prior to an official opening Sept. 5, for a run through Sept. 27.

The Dreaming, which is based on Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, was originally commissioned by the National Youth Music Theatre (NYMT) and first performed at Northcott Theatre, Exeter in August 2001.  Subsequent performances by NYMT over the next year took place at The Linbury Studio Theatre, Royal Opera House Covent Garden in December 2001, at Guildford’s Yvonne Arnauld Theatre in August 2002, and at Edinburgh’s George Square Theatre as part of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, also in August 2002. It was revived in 2012 by NYMT as part of the International Youth Arts Festival at Kingston’s Rose Theatre.

This new production, which is presented by the Union Theatre in association with Aria Entertainments, is the first in a triple bill of Goodall’s works at the theatre. In a press statement, Goodall commented, "I am really thrilled that three of my musicals, spanning the years 1986-2010, are to be produced at the Union Theatre this autumn. I hope people will find the three pieces quite different in scale, style and mood, and that audiences will enjoy the super-intimate setting of this lovely, cosy theatre, and that my ex-chorister's surround-sound vocal polyphony will feel as enveloping as it is inside my head!”

The production will be choreographed by Helen Rymer, with design by Kingsley Hall and David Griffiths as musical director.

The cast of 20 will comprise Alastair Hill, Joshua Tonks, Richard Brindley, Daisy Tonge, Chris Hancock, Kayleigh McKnight, Michael Burgen, Rachel Flynn, Holly Julier, Simone Murphy, Matthew Jay Ryan, David Breeds, Alex Green, Jordan Ginger, Joel Bruman, Faye Charlotte Ainley, Rosie O’Hare, Hannah Jay Allan, Christina Harris and Hollie Evans.
