Virginia's Opera Roanoke has named Steven White as its general and artistic director, replacing both general director G. Ronald Kastner and artistic director Craig Fields.

White, the company's principal conductor since 2001, has also conducted at New York City Opera, Baltimore Opera, and other companies. He is married to soprano Elizibeth Futral.

"This is an incredible opportunity for Opera Roanoke," said board president Joseph D. Logan III in a statement. "Steven White's proven abilities, experience and visibility in the national opera community can only benefit our company."

"Since I believe that live opera has the potential to inspire and inform the life experiences of every person," White said, "my goal is to help this opera company become an indispensable ingredient in the artistic and civic culture of our beloved community."
