Other Desert Cities began Broadway previews Oct. 12, 2012, and officially opened Nov. 3 at the Booth Theatre. The acclaimed play premiered Off-Broadway in 2011 at Lincoln Center Theater's Mitzi E. Newhouse space.
Much of the original Off-Broadway cast, including Stockard Channing and Stacy Keach, reprise their performances in the current Broadway production. It was originally billed as a limited engagement through Jan. 8. LCT announced that it would play an open run, with tickets initially on sale through March 25.
In addition to Tony Award winner Channing (Six Degrees of Separation, The House of Blue Leaves) as matriarch Polly Wyeth and Golden Globe winner Keach (Indians, "Hemingway") as Lyman Wyeth, the cast features Tony nominee Judith Light (Lombardi, "Ugly Betty") as Silda Grauman, Rachel Griffiths ("Brothers & Sisters") as Brooke Wyeth and Justin Kirk ("Weeds," "Angels in America") as Trip Wyeth.
Griffiths, who was a new addition to the Broadway cast, will depart the production March 4. Original Off-Broadway cast member Elizabeth Marvel will return to the role beginning March 6. Kirk succeeded original cast member Thomas Sadoski in January.
Here's how LCT bills the play: "In Other Desert Cities Brooke Wyeth (Griffiths), a once promising novelist, returns home after a six year absence to celebrate Christmas in Palm Springs with her parents, former members of the Reagan inner-circle (Channing and Keach), her brother (Kirk) and her aunt (Light). When Brooke announces that she is about to publish a memoir focusing on an explosive chapter in the family’s history, the holiday reunion is thrown into turmoil and the Wyeths are both bound together and torn apart as they struggle to come to terms with their past."
