News Patti LuPone, Austin Pendleton, Pedro Almodovar Among Winners at United Solo Festival United Solo, the world's largest solo theatre festival, concluded its five-week season with a closing ceremony held Nov. 20 at Theatre Row. Numerous artists were recognized for their solo performances.

Tony Award winner Patti LuPone was presented with the annual uAward by Omar Sangare, the founder and artistic director of the festival. LuPone was recognized as Outstanding Solo Performer for her performance in her one-woman show The Gypsy In My Soul.

"I am surprised and touched to receive this award, and also honored to be in the company of such wonderful performers as John Lithgow, Robin Williams and Daniel Beatty," said LuPone in her acceptance speech at the ceremony. "I share [this recognition] with my director Scott Wittman and musical director Joseph Thalken."

In the uAward category, Beaty was nominated for Through the Night, Lithgow was nominated for Stories by Heart and Williams was nominated for Weapons of Self-Destruction.

Other winners at the festival included Austin Pendleton (The Diary of Anne Frank) for Best Direction of Woman Before a Glass; Patty Diphusa as Best International Show, written by Pedro Almodovar ("Women on the Verge…"); and Picture Incomplete for Best Musical, a one-man musical by Trent Armand Kendall (Into the Woods).

United Solo is a New York-based partnership of theatre makers dedicated to the genre of one-person performance.
