Heather Laws graduates from Kit Kat Girl Rosie to Sally Bowles when she takes over the starring role in the hit Cabaret revival at Studio 54 July 15. "Frasier" star Jane Leeves, who had been playing the role of the ill fated Bowles, ended her run in the production July 14.
Kander and Ebb's Tony-winning Cabaret revival marks Laws' Broadway debut, although the singer-actress has appeared regionally in productions of Candide, Beguiled Again, Jesus Christ Superstar and Call Me Madam. Laws also played Isabella in a recent staged reading of a musical version of Measure for Measure at Playwrights Horizons.
The current company of Cabaret features a trio of acclaimed television actors: John Stamos — of "Full House" fame — portrays the pansexual Emcee, Emmy winner and Follies Tony nominee Polly Bergen stars as the world weary Fraulein Schneider, and "Barney Miller" Emmy winner Hal Linden plays the German Jew Herr Schultz. Past Sally Bowles include Natasha Richardson, who won a 1998 Tony Award for her performance, as well as Jennifer Jason Leigh, Brooke Shields, Susan Egan, Katie Finneran, Gina Gershon, Kate Shindle, Lea Thomspon and Molly Ringwald. Liza Minnelli won an Academy Award for her performance as Sally Bowles in the film version of the Broadway musical.
The Roundabout Theatre Company's Cabaret opened on Broadway on March 19, 1998, in a production directed by Sam Mendes with co-direction and choreography by Rob Marshall. The critically hailed revival won four 1998 Tonys including Best Revival of a Musical as well as awards to Alan Cumming (Leading Actor in a Musical), Richardson (Leading Actress in a Musical) and Ron Rifkin (Featured Actor in a Musical). Tickets for Cabaret may be purchased at the Studio 54 box office, 254 West 54th Street, or through TeleCharge at (212) 239-6200.
