News Peter Shaffer to Be Honored by Alec Baldwin, John Guare and Shirley Knight Oct. 17 Alec Baldwin, John Guare and Shirley Knight will take part in an Oct. 17 benefit reading of Peter Shaffer's Five Finger Exercise, celebrating the work of the acclaimed playwright and screenwriter, at the Players.

The Fundamental Theatre Project presents the 7 PM benefit that will be directed by Knight ("Sweet Bird of Youth," Kennedy's Children) and Nicola Murphy. Casting will be announced shortly.

The evening will also pay tribute to Shaffer, with words by actor Baldwin and playwright Guare, as well as video tributes by Tom Stoppard, Brian Bedford, Simon Callow and more to be announced.

Five Finger Exercise centers on a music teacher who appears to bring peace to a dysfunctional family. It premiered in 1959 and was adapted into a 1962 film.

Shaffer's plays include Amadeus, Equus, The Royal Hunt of the sun, Black Comedy and The Salt Land.

Premium seating, including a post-show reception, cocktail hour and a copy of the play signed by Shaffer and the cast, are available for $250. General seating is $100. The Players is located at 16 Grammercy Park South.
