Dozens of opera stars paid tribute to outgoing Metropolitan Opera general manager Joseph Volpe at a gala concert on May 20.

Among the many world-class singers who packed the Met stage for the five-hour event were Ren_e Fleming, Kiri Te Kanawa, Deborah Voigt, Plšcido Domingo, Mirella Freni, Karita Mattila, Olga Borodina, Susan Graham, Denyce Graves, Ben Heppner, Thomas Hampson, and Ildar Abdrazakov.

Tenor Luciano Pavarotti, who was scheduled to appear, did not, according to press reports, because of recent back problems. A New York Times review of the event said that music director James Levine, who is recovering from shoulder surgery, was not present, but the Boston Globe later reported that Levine was in the audience.
