The season opens on September 15 with a gala concert featuring flutist James Galway and artist advisor Andrew Davis both conducting and performing. Galway will play Mozart's Flute Concerto No. 2 and an arrangement of the Carmen Fantasy, before heading to the podium to lead Davis through Mozart's Rondo in A for Piano and Orchestra.
The centennial anniversary of Shostakovich's birth will be marked with a tribute weekend October 6-8, featuring pianist Vladimir Feltsman performing the composer's Piano Concerto No. 1.
The PSO will dedicate several concerts to its "Composer of the Year," Christopher Theofanidis, giving the Pittsburgh debut of The Here and Now and the world premiere of his Concerto for Violin, written for Sarah Chang, who will perform the work in June 2007.
Visiting artists include conductors Marin Alsop, Marek Janowsk and Peter Oundjian; pianists Emanuel Ax, Louis Lortie and Garrick Ohlsson; and violinists Leila Josefowicz and Joshua Bell.
