CHICAGO -- The Broadway touring production never reached Chicago's Shubert Theatre as promised. But Play On! is coming anyway -- as a Goodman Theatre local premiere. Conceived and directed by Sheldon Epps, the musical features songs by Duke Ellington and a book by Cheryl L. West, whose Puddin' and Pete was produced in the Goodman Theatre Studio in the spring of 1993. Goodman's summer musical opens June 19 and runs through July 25. Inspired by Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, the story begins as Vy, a young girl, takes the "A" train to Harlem to write songs for the Duke, the greatest bandleader of our time. Casting will be announced around May 18.
