PlayBlog Playbill Video Joins the Newsboys at Rehearsal of Paper Mill's Newsies (Video) Newsies will make its world premiere at New Jersey's Paper Mill Playhouse when the new adaptation of the 1992 Disney movie musical hits the stage Sept. 15, prior to an official opening Sept. 25. Tony nominee Jeff Calhoun, director of Broadway’s upcoming Bonnie & Clyde, directs the Paper Mill limited engagement that runs through Oct. 16.

Here, the Newsboys invited Playbill Video to a New York City rehearsal at the New 42nd Street Studios for a first look at the adaptation that features music by eight-time Academy Award-winning composer Alan Menken, lyrics by Jack Feldman and a new book by four-time Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein.

The boys perform "Carrying the Banner" and "Seize the Day," two of the big musical numbers from the cult classic. Also, Newsies' leading man Jeremy Jordan, who stars as Jack Kelly, belts out a reprise of "Santa Fe," which is set to close the show's first act. Following their performance, Jordan, Andrew Keenan-Bolger, who plays Crutchie, and the creative team chatted about taking on the new work.

Newsies, according to press notes, is “inspired by the real life ‘Newsboy Strike of 1899,’ when newsboy Kid Blink led the ragged orphans and runaways known as newsies on a two-week-long action against Joseph Pulitzer, William Randolph Hearst and other powerful newspaper publishers. Set in New York City at the turn of the century, the musical is the tale of newsie Jack Kelly, who dreams of a better life far from the hardship of the streets. But when Pulitzer and Hearst raise distribution prices at the newsies’ expense, Jack finds a cause to fight for and rallies his army of newsies to strike.”
