News Puppeteer, "Who Lives in Canada," Wins Avenue Q's "One Night Stand" The button-eyed and green-nosed blue puppet Maurice Tipo and his creator Andrew MacDonald Smith made their Broadway debut in Avenue Q March 10 after winning the nationwide "One Night Stand" contest.

The winner of the contest was announced March 10 and made a cameo appearance in the show that evening. Smith, a 22-year old from Edmonton in Alberta, Canada was the top vote getter. (The province, coincidentally, is mentioned in the musical's song "My Girlfriend Who Lives In Canada.")

The three finalists of the contest were invited to New York with their creators and treated to dinner, a backstage pass and a performance of the 2004 Best Musical Tony Award winner. The other finalists were Miss Greta Green (by Joe Kovacs of New York City) and Kitty Swallows (by Theresa Cullen of Glendale, California).

Fans were able to vote for their favorite and view videos at www.avenueq.com during the month of February.

"What if there was a 'One Night' vacancy on Avenue Q?," posed the sweepstake competition. "Does your puppet have what it takes to join the famous cast of characters?"

Original Broadway cast member Rick Lyon created the puppets seen in the show. For more information, visit http://www.avenueq.com.
