Reality Series "High School Musical: Summer Session" to Debut on ABC in July

News   Reality Series "High School Musical: Summer Session" to Debut on ABC in July ABC will debut its new reality competition series "High School Musical: Summer Session" July 20, the network has announced.

The new series, based on the Disney Channel musical phenomenon, centers around a nationwide talent search and a select group of contestants who will compete at "HSM"-themed challenges while at a music conservatory.

"The casting scouts welcome anyone and everyone ages 16-22 who has dreamed of being center stage," according to an ABC release. Whether "the high school quarterback who's never tried out for a play but has a song in his heart, the drama club extrovert looking to break into the big time, someone looking to trade the chess club routine for a dance routine — all are invited to 'Get'cha head in the game,' as the hit song says!"

Hosts and judges are yet to be announced — even the grand prize is being kept under wraps. The series will premiere July 20 in an hour-long debut and continue to air Sunday and Monday nights at 8 PM for three weeks. Then, the show will continue only on Mondays at 8 PM through the end of the summer; check local listings.

Jay Blumenfeld and Tony Marsh ("Here Come the Newlyweds") executive-produced the series.

Previous reports stated stars from the Disney Channel original movies are expected to appear in the show. High School Musical centers on the unlikely friendship that evolves between the jock Troy and brainiac Gabriella at a karaoke contest. Little did the two know that she would be transferring to his school. The duo decide — against their friends' wishes and to the dismay of school stars (a drama queen and her twin brother) — to audition for the high school musical.

The original movie has spawned a sequel and a forthcoming feature film as well as stage shows, a concert tour, ice shows, a national tour and more.
