Salonen, the music director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, will be presented with the President's Merit Award at the ninth annual Grammy Salute to Classical Music on February 10. At the second annual Grammy Salute to Jazz on February 8, Silver, saxophonist Benny Golson, and vocalist Jon Hendricks will receive the same honor.
The Academy also plans a Grammy Salute to Gospel on February 10, at which Andrae Crouch, Bill and Gloria Gaither, and Albertina Walker will be honored. All three events will feature live performances.
Salonen, who had led the Philharmonic for the last 13 years, is also the composer of LA Variations and other works. Silver helped to create the "hard bop" style as a member of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers and in his own group. Hendricks, the inventor of "vocalese"‹the setting of lyrics to instrumental jazz works‹founded the highly influential jazz vocal group Lambert, Hendricks, and Ross. Golson has performed with Benny Goodman, Dizzy Gillespie, Lionel Hampton, and Blakey; several of his compositions, including "I Remember Clifford" and "Whisper Not," are widely performed jazz standards.
