Red, American Idiot and Fela! dominated the design awards, with Red taking three (Lighting, Sets, Sound of a Play), and two each to American Idiot (Sets and Lighting of a Musical) and Fela! (Costumes and Sound of a Musical).

Best Costumes of a Play went to five-time winner Catherine Zuber for her work on The Royal Family. Zuber visited the press room and revealed that she did not design the dress she wore to the Tonys — Larry Owens did. She credited the success of the show to her "great director," Doug Hughes.
