LOS ANGELES -- Richard Dreyfuss will star as Benedict Arnold in a radio theatre production of The General From America by Richard Nelson.

The play, a critical and popular success for the Royal Shakespeare Company last season, will be performed on January 7, 8, 9 and 10 at the Doubletree Guest Suites in Santa Monica. Produced by L.A. Theatre Works as part of its "The Play's The Thing" series, The General From America will be recorded before a live audience for future broadcast on public radio.

Dreyfuss will be joined by Shirley Knight and Douglas Weston, among other actors. Dreyfuss admits to a great fascination with Benedict Arnold: "He was a complicated man, living in a difficult and complicated time. He was one of America's most respected leaders, which is why his betrayal was so shocking. This play explores his motivations, drawing him as a sympathetic, if flawed, character,' he said.
