News Robert Lowell's Benito Cereno Will Play Off-Broadway at the Flea; Casting Announced Horizon Theatre Rep's production of Benito Cereno, written by the late Robert Lowell and based on the Herman Melville novel of the same name, will begin performances Off-Broadway Sept. 22, prior to an official opening Sept. 25, at the Flea Theater.

Directed by Woodie King Jr., the cast will feature Reynaldo Piniella, Frank Mayers, Mutiyat Ade-Salu, Jaymes Jorsling, Arthur Bartow, Benjamin Thys, Abdi Ismail, Pedro Rezende, Steven Alexander, Ama Birch, Uchenna Onyia, Akintunde Sogunro, Rafael de Mussa and Sean Christian Taylor.

Based on Melville's novel, Benito Cereno is set in 1770 and depicts the mysterious events that occur when an American merchant vessel comes upon a battered Spanish ship with its nearly all-black crew and a white captain, Benito Cereno.

First produced in 1965, when it won an Obie Award as part of the Robert Lowell trilogy "The Old Glory," Benito Cereno has not been seen in New York since a 1976 revival. The 1965 production of Lowell's play also won Obies for actors Roscoe Lee Browne, Frank Langella and Lester Rawlins and costume designer Willa Kim.

Other members of the creative team include choreographer Bruce Heath, costume designer Cathy Small, set designer Chein-Yu Peng and lighting designer Joyce Liao.

Now in its 11th season, Horizon Theatre Rep, under artistic director Rafael De Mussa, is dedicated to producing work from the international repertory.
