News Role of Tracy Turnblad Is Up for Grabs in “Hairspray” Film; Nationwide Search Announced New Line Cinema will launch a nationwide search Feb. 4 to fill three roles in the upcoming film version of the Tony-winning musical Hairspray.

Actors to fill the roles of Tracy Turnblad, Seaweed and Li’l Inez are all being sought. Casting sessions will be held Feb. 4 on the campus of Georgia State University in Atlanta, Feb. 11 at the Hilton Theatre Rehearsal Studios in New York and Feb. 18 at the Chicago Academy of Arts in Chicago.

Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, who are producing the film, said in a statement, “One of the most exciting things to do as producers is be able to offer life-changing roles to new actors, and ‘Hairspray’ has presented us with an amazing opportunity to create new stars.”

In other news, Army Archerd recently reported that Billy Crystal is being considered for the role of Wilbur Turnblad.

“Hairspray” will be directed by Adam Shankman and is based on both John Waters' original 1988 film and the subsequent Broadway musical that won eight Tony Awards including Best Musical. Hairspray composer Marc Shaiman will serve as the film’s music supervisor and will produce the movie’s songs. Shaiman and lyricist Scott Wittman will also be the film’s executive producers. Thomas Meehan and Mark O’Donnell will write the film’s screenplay.
