Canadian Opera Company’s upcoming season will include the world premiere of Hadrian, a new opera by Rufus Wainwright and Daniel MacIvor.
The opera, which explores the relationship between Roman Emperor Hadrian and the young Antinous, will run October 13–27 at Toronto’s Four Seasons Centre. Peter Hinton will direct a cast that includes Thomas Hampson and Isaiah Bell in the central roles, with Karita Mattila as Plotina.
The season kicks off September 30 with Robert Carsen’s production of Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin, with Gordon Bintner in the title role and Joyce El-Khoury as Tatyana. Performances will run through November 3.
Christine Goerke will sing Elektra January 26–February 22, 2019, in a new production from James Robinson. Goerke, who also sings the role at the Metropolitan Opera in March, returns to COC following her portrayal of Brünnhilde in Wagner’s Ring Cycle over the past three seasons.
Rounding out the season are Mozart’s Così fan tutte (February 5–23), Puccini’s La Bohème (April 17–May 22), and Verdi’s Otello (April 27–May 21).
