He’s been made the subject of books, tributes, concerts, musical revues, satires and won a host of awards. How else, at this late date, can the work of Stephen Sondheim be examined, heralded and lionized?

Well, a clutch of performances artists have found a way. On Jan. 6, several poetry slam performers (as they call themselves) will gather at Joe’s Pub in Manhattan and approach the songs of Sondheim from a poet’s perspective.

The evening will be titled A Sondheim Slam!. Among the featured artists are Regie Cabico, Evert Eden, Yolanda Wilkinson, Helena D. Lewis, Maida Del Valle, Tish benson, Dana Bryant, Shappy Seasholts, Cristin O'Keefe Aptoics, Patricia Smith, Boogie Man and Kayo. Valeria Vasilevski will direct.

Poetry slam habitues, who work primarily on their feet as opposed to on the page, are more commonly seen at Downtown locales such as the legendary Nuyorican Poets Cafe in the East Village. Their style is rhythmic, drawing from the coffee-and-cigarette-stained syncopation of the Beat poets of the 1950s, as well as rap artists of the present day.

The event will take place at 7 PM. There is no word of what songs from the Sondheim catalogue will be employed.
