Tenor William Brown died in Jacksonville, Florida, on Wednesday, October 20, the Florida Times-Union reports. He was 66 years old.

A devotee of contemporary music, Brown premiered several works written particularly for him. In addition, he recorded art songs by African American composers, spirituals, oratorios, symphonic works, and operas, and performed with the Royal Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, and other orchestras.

Brown was a much-beloved professor of voice at the University of North Florida starting with its founding in 1972.
