Delays involving the opening of 2econd Stage's [sic] new space have caused the theatre to postpone the first performance of That Championship Season from March 26 until April 2. The opening has also been pushed back, from April 14 to April 21. Apparently, official inspection of the new theatre, at the northwest corner of 43rd Street and Eight Avenue, took longer than anticipated and delayed the load-in of the play's set.
In was unclear as to whether the production would tack on an extra week at the end of the run to make up for lost performances.
Jason Miller's Pulitzer Prize-winning play is about the 20th reunion of a championship high school basketball team. Dylan Baker (La Bete, the film "Happiness") , Ray Baker, James Gammon (Buried Child), Michael O'Keefe, and Vyto Ruginis star. Scott Ellis directs.
Originally produced at the Public Theater in 1972, it transferred to Broadway later that year and played a total of 844 performances on and Off-Broadway. The original cast featured Walter McGinn, Charles Durning, Michael McGuire, Paul Sorvino and Richard A. Dysart.
Two other plays have been chosen for 2econd Stage's first season at their 296-seat Times Square theatre: Albert Innaurato's farcical Gemini, directed by Mark Brokaw (starting May 18) and the New York premiere of Cheryl L. West's Jar The Floor, directed by Marion McClinton (starting July 27).
