True Colors Theatre Company and Jujamcyn Theaters present the 8th Annual August Wilson Monologue Competition May 2 at Broadway’s August Wilson Theatre.

The free event is open to the public and features high school students from Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, New York, North Carolina, Pittsburgh and Seattle performing monologues by the late, celebrated American playwright. In preparation, each student has worked with two of Mr. Wilson’s closest collaborators: director Kenny Leon and dramaturg Todd Kreidler.

A panel of celebrity judges evaluates the performers. The first place winner will receive a $1,500 cash prize, the runner-up a $1,000 cash prize and the honorable mention, a $500 cash prize. Each of the winners will also become eligible for college scholarship opportunities, and all finalists receive the gift of TCG’s Century Cycle collection.

The competition is aimed at introducing the late Wilson’s work to new generations and nurturing his legacy. Program participants engage with Mr. Wilson’s ten-play cycle and receive coaching from teaching artists before presenting their monologues on the Broadway stage.

The August Wilson Theatre is located at 245 West 52nd Street, Manhattan. For more information on the event visit augustwilsonmonologue.com.
