News Thomas, Franklin, Jones and Jennette Join Smith for Dreamgirls in West Virginia Casting is now complete for the West Virginia Public Theatre staging of Dreamgirls starring Q. Smith as Effie White.

As previously reported, Smith (Les Miserables) will co-star with Eric Pinnick as Curtis Taylor, Jr., Tryphena Wade as Deena Jones and Lawrence Street as Marty.

Newly announced cast members include Julius Thomas II (Putnam County Spelling Bee) as C.C. White, Shelese Franklin (The Wiz) as Lorrell, Carole Jones as Michelle Morris and Tyson Jennette as James "Thunder" Early.

Stephen Nachamie, who helmed the Actors' Fund benefit concerts of Funny Girl and Chess, directs and choreographs the production that begins performances June 24 and runs through June 29.

Dreamgirls, by Henry Krieger and Tom Eyen, won six Tony Awards, including Best Musical, in its 1982 Broadway premiere. Michael Bennett would take home awards for Best Direction and Best Choreography alongside collaborator Michael Peters.

Jennifer Holliday created the memorable role of Effie White, stopping the show nightly with her Tony-winning performance of "And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going." The recent film, adapted and directed by Bill Condon, earned newcomer Jennifer Hudson the Golden Globe and Academy Awards for her portrayal of Effie White.
