Classic Arts News Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony to Base Wages on Annual Evaluations The Toyko Metropolitan Symphony has adopted the annual performance evaluation system used by other city agencies, Tokyo's Yomiuri Shimbun reports.
According to the paper, city officials insisted that the orchestra introduce the system as a condition for continued financial support.

Under a new contract agreed upon by the orchestra management and its musicians' union, musicians will be able to chose between fixed-term employment and the new system, in which wages are based on an annual evaluation.

The ensemble is the first Japanese orchestra to adopt such a system, according to Yomiuri Simbun.
