Assistant conductor Ron Friesen followed two weeks later. His resignation letter said that the orchestra's organization "no longer fosters trust, respect, and support."
The orchestra was surprised and confused by the pair of resignations. Cami Davis, who represents the orchestra on the board, said, "We're really as much in the dark as anyone. The Everett Symphony has always been a big family, including personality dynamics of any family."
Davis added that Cobbs' resignation was still under discussion. "We're in the process of discussing a positive conclusion," she said, "where Paul is still music director." The board will meet tomorrow to discuss the orchestra's future.
Both conductors will likely stay with the orchestra through the 2005-06 season. Cobbs' contract with the orchestra runs through 2006-07, and includes the right to resign with a year's notice.
