News VINTAGE PLAYBILL: Cyrano de Bergerac, Starring Jose Ferrer, 1946 Roundabout's revival of Cyrano de Bergerac, starring Douglas Hodge as the ample-nosed title character, opens Oct. 11 at the American Airlines Theatre. In honor of Cyrano's return to the stage, Playbill revisits the classic 1946 production starring Jose Ferrer.

Ferrer premiered in the role on Oct. 8, 1946, at the Alvin (now Neil Simon) Theatre, in what would become an iconic interpretation of the character. New York Times reviewer Brooks Atkinson hailed Ferrer's "pulsating performance" as "rattling good theatre." He won a Tony and later an Academy Award for reprising the role onscreen.

This vintage Playbill from the Playbill Vault archives is dated Nov. 4, 1946, one month into the 193-performance run.
