News Wall Street Journal Critic and Satchmo Playwright Terry Teachout Receives Bradley Prize Wall Street Journal drama critic and playwright Terry Teachout, whose Louis Armstrong play Satchmo at the Waldorf is currently running Off-Broadway, has been named the recipient of the 2014 Bradley Prize.

The Bradley Prizes recognize achievement in the fields of academia, public-policy research, journalism, civic affairs and the arts. The honor carries a stipend of $250,000.

Teachout will be awarded the prize June 18 in a ceremony to be held at Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.

Teachout is also a biographer and opera librettist. His books include "Duke: A Life of Duke Ellington," "Pops: A Life of Louis Armstrong" and "The Skeptic: A Life of H.L. Mencken." He received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2012 and has served on the National Council on the Arts.

"Terry Teachout has distinguished himself, not just as a first-rate journalist, but as a supporter of the arts," said Michael W. Grebe, president and CEO of the Bradley Foundation, in a statement. "His work as a biographer and a playwright is critical to advancing and preserving America’s artistic and cultural tradition."
