Tony winner Nikki M. James and the company of Encores! Off-Center’s upcoming presentation of The Bubbly Black Girls Sheds Her Chameleon Skin met the press July 19 to offer a taste of the Kirsten Childs musical. Take a look below as James and her castmates sing and dance their way through “The Skate.”
Performances, under the direction of Robert O’Hara, will run July 26 and 27 at New York City Center.
In addition to James, who takes on the role of Viveca, the cast includes Josh Davis as Director Bob, Yurel Echezarreta as Modern Teacher, Korey Jackson as Gregory, Kingsley Leggs as Daddy, Julius Thomas III as Ballet Teacher, Shelley Thomas as Mommy, Alex Wong as Jazz Teacher, Penelope Armstead-Williams, Tanya Birl, Kaitlyn Davidson, Lauren E.J. Hamilton, Jo’Nathan Michael, and Kenita R. Miller.
The 2000 musical follows a young black dancer who travels from the West Coast to Broadway while navigating race and gender politics to unravel her own identity.
The production will feature choreography by Byron Easley and music direction by Annastasia Victory.
Following Bubbly Black Girl, the Off-Center season will conclude with Carole King and Maurice Sendak’s Really Rosie; performances run August 2–5.
