"No one grows up saying 'Hey, I want to be an understudy on Broadway,' but I'll tell you there's nothing better"... And that seems to be the case for Broadway’s Jared Bradshaw and Lindsay Northen, living a heavenly life in Hell's Kitchen.
Just a few blocks West of Times Square, one of the busiest and most visited tourist destinations on earth, lies this quiet and quaint historic neighborhood with young families, farmers markets and endless restaurant options (like Bea, which we visit to close the episode!) Jared, Lindsay and their two-year-old daughter, Georgia live right in the middle of Hells Kitchen… and they couldn't be happier "..right dear?"
They are both principal understudies in long-time hit shows, Lindsay in Wicked (covering Glinda the Good Witch), and Jared in Jersey Boys, (covering three principal tracks and three ensemble) "Lindsay's Stage door is on 51st street and mine is on 52nd street. I get to pick her up and walk home," says Jared, boasting about the ten-minute walk home from their adjacent Broadway theatres. But that convenience comes with a price.
How much you ask?... Watch the episode to find out! Lindsay explains, "The fact that we can live here...and come and see (Georgia) on a two-show day... We can take her to the playground and eat dinner with her. I mean, that's worth all the money we pay for this apartment." And talk about Manhattan living! Space is at a premium in this part of town and storage solutions are vital. Fold away dining tables, bed risers and aerial shoe storage makes this 600-square foot apartment feel open. But the icing on the Hells Kitchen cake? Jared and Lindsay's 250 square foot veranda complete with garden lights, dozens of potted plants and room for a yearly "Biscuit and Bacon Brunch" (which both your hosts had the pleasure of attending this year)! "An apartment with an outdoor space? It’s like we found a unicorn."
Join Broadway Boroughs in their next Episode where they shift from on stage to behind the table, when we visit Merri Sugarman, casting director for Tara Rubin casting, at her beautiful apartment in the neighborhood of Manhattan Valley, in the Upper West Side of Manhattan. (They plan on bringing 16 bars and our tap shoes!)
