It began its London run in December 2009, and was the winner of seven theatre awards, including the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Musical. A separate production continues to tour the UK, with plans for a new production to open in Sydney later in 2012.

During its West End run, it has played nearly 1,000 performances, to audiences of over three-quarters of a million people in total.

The production currently features Carley Stenson as Elle, with Stephen Ashfield as Emmett, Ben Freeman as Warner and Peter Davison as Professor Callahan (a role the latter has played since the show's premiere). Straight from her run in this show, Stenson takes over as Princess Fiona in Shrek the Musical from Kimberley Walsh, beginning performances May 23 at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane.

Directed and choreographed by Jerry Mitchell, Legally Blonde The Musical has music and lyrics by Laurence O’Keefe and Nell Benjamin, book by Heather Hach, set design by David Rockwell, costume design by Gregg Barnes, lighting design by Kenneth Posner and Paul Miller, sound design by ACME Sound Partners and orchestrations by Christopher Jahnke.

Legally Blonde The Musical is produced in the West End by Sonia Friedman Productions, Robert G. Bartner, Ambassador Theatre Group, Bud Martin, Adam Zotovich, Jamie Hendry Productions, Matthew Byam Shaw and Act Productions.
