In a press statement by the Society of London Theatres, it has been stated the marquees of West End theatres in central London will be dimmed for one minute.
An actor in theatre, film, television and radio, as well as an author, he was a Rank Organisation film star in the 1950s before becoming a Shakespearean and West End theatre actor and television star. He was appointed a CBE in 1979 and knighted in 1997 for his services to drama.
In a statement, his actor son Marc Sinden comented, "He worked out that he only had a total of five weeks' unemployment between 1942 and 2008. Even though his death was expected, it is still a huge loss to his family and we, his brother, his son, his four grandchildren and great-grandchild will all miss his humor and knowledge."
