The Daily News reports that the actor will play the groom in the new Harvey Fierstein-John Bucchino musical that will arrive on Broadway later this season. Cavenaugh's agent could not confirm the casting, although other sources told Playbill.com negotiations are currently underway with the actor to join the new musical.

Directed by Tony Award winner John Doyle, A Catered Affair will begin Broadway previews March 25, 2008, toward an April 17 opening at a Jujamcyn theatre to be announced.

The marriage-minded musical (based on the Paddy Chayefsky TV film and movie) will star Tony winner Faith Prince (as mother of the bride), Tony nominee Tom Wopat (as father of the bride), four-time Tony winner Harvey Fierstein (as uncle of the bride) and Leslie Kritzer (as the bride) with Philip Hoffman, Katie Klaus, Heather MacRae, Lori Wilner and Kristine Zbornik.

Prior to Broadway, A Catered Affair will inaugurate the 2007-8 Season at San Diego's Old Globe Theatre (performances begin Sept. 20, 2007), according to producer Jordan Roth (vice president, Jujamcyn Theaters).

According to press notes, "Funny, heartbreaking and oh so human, A Catered Affair reveals relationships strained to their limits when a couple must decide whether to spend their life savings on a family business or to launch their only daughter's marriage with a lavish catered affair. Harvey Fierstein's book and John Bucchino's score seize the opportunity to explore the meaning of family and the need for love, both new and reawakened." The musical is based on the Turner Entertainment motion picture distributed by Warner Brothers and written by Gore Vidal, and the original teleplay by Paddy Chayefsky.

A Catered Affair will be produced on Broadway by Jujamcyn Theaters, Jordan Roth, Harvey Entertainment/Ron Fierstein, Richie Jackson and Daryl Roth.

After creating the roles of Joe and Jerry in the Playwrights Horizons production of Grey Gardens, Matt Cavenaugh is currently playing those part in the Broadway mounting of the new musical, which ends its run July 29. Cavenaugh made his Broadway debut as Bud in Urban Cowboy. He also appeared in the national tours of Thoroughly Modern Millie, Ragtime, Strike Up the Band and Grease! as well as in regional productions of Carousel, Anything Goes, Dorian, Footloose and john and jen. Cavenaugh can also be seen in the film "Sexual Dependency."
