Williamstown artistic director Jenny Gersten, who previously produced several Shakespeare in the Park productions for the Public Theater, has reinstated outdoor performances of free productions at Williamstown.
"The free theatre… is actually a long tradition at Williamstown," Gersten told Playbill.com. "It has been inside for the past six years on the main stage, but when I was here [as associate producer] we used to do it outside. I always loved that. So when I got the job [as artistic director], the first thing I said was that free theatre is going to be outside. I wanted to bring it back to something classic and known, and for both kids and grownups. It's what we do in Williamstown and what Joe [Papp] initially did in [Central Park], is bringing everyone together to have that real sort of communal experience."
