Joanne Woodward — who last year become heavily involved in the day-to day operations of the 71-year-old Westport Country Playhouse, and was this year appointed artistic director — directs Richard Greenberg's drama of family mysteries and the mystery of family, Three Days of Rain, but only through Aug. 4. The production opened on July 18.

The play ran at Off-Broadway's Manhattan Theatre Club a couple seasons back. Last year, Woodward directed Maugham's The Constant Wife at Westport.

Each member of the cast plays two roles, doubling as father and son, or mother and daughter, as the case may be. The play's first act looks at a brother and sister and their best friend in the present day. The three are connected through their two fathers, who were partners in a famous architecture firm decades before. The second act then revisits the past to meet the two fathers and the woman that came between them.

Alex Draper will play Walker/Ned, Alyssa Bresnahan is Nan/Lina and David Conrad plays Pip/Theo. Draper appeared in Golden Boy and Waiting for Lefty, both directed by Woodward Off-Broadway. Bresnahan acted in Sir Peter Hall's mammoth mounting of Tantalus, which recently toured the UK. Finally, Conrad was seen on Broadway in The Deep Blue Sea.

The designers for Three Days of Rain are Troy Hourie (sets), Howard Kaplan (costumes), Deborah Constantine (lights) and Jerry M. Yager (sound). *
