Magic artistic director Chris Smith directs the work which began previews Nov. 13 in the Sam Shepard Theatre space for a run through Dec. 12. "In the 1990s, I served on the co-op board of a desirable Fifth Avenue apartment building in Manhattan," stated Grodin in a release about his inspiration. "Before you can purchase an apartment in these prime buildings, you must present yourself before the board so they can determine your worthiness to live in their midst. Sound like the stuff of a grand comedy? I thought so too."
The cast features Ken Ruta, Robert Parsons, Tom Blair, Fred Burrell, Will Marchetti, Frances Lee McCain, Jarion Monroe, Carrie Paff, Eric Siegel and Clive Worsley.
The Right Kind of People design team includes Annie Smart (scenic), Fumiko Bielefedt (costumes), Russell H. Champa (lighting), Norman Kern (sound) and Sarah Ellen Joynt (properties). Rosie Goldman serves as stage manager.
Grodin is known for his work as a film actor appearing in "Sex and the College Girl," "Rosemary's Baby," "Heaven Can Wait," "Midnight Run," "Taking Care of Business," "Beethoven" and "Dave" as well as host of his own talk show on CNBC. On Broadway, Grodin has appeared in Tchin-Tchin, Absence of a Cello and Same Time, Next Year and directed Unexpected Guests, Lovers and Other Strangers and Thieves.
The Magic — which opened its season with the new musical The Opposite of Sex — is also presenting the world premieres three other works in repertory as well as the American premiere of Rebecca Gilman's The Sweetest Swing in Baseball and Wesley Moore's A Reckoning.
