Worth Street first created the series on April 7, 2003, in response to the war in Iraq. It ran for nine Mondays at The Tribeca Playhouse and featured such talents as Kathleen Chalfant, Clare Higgins, T. R. Knight, Andrea Martin, S. Epatha Merkerson, Denis O’Hare, Brenda Wehle, among many others. A press release said "these three shows will bring Voices up to date and focus on the issues of importance in the upcoming election, including the current state of affairs in Iraq."

Worth Street artistic director Jeff Cohen said in a statement, “The urgency of voicing dissent has never been more important or more patriotic. Since last year, the situation in Iraq and in the world has worsened. When the United States is seen to have tortured Iraqi prisoners and suspended the constitutional rights of its own citizens, we have an obligation to speak out as loudly as we can.”

The performances will include excerpts from plays, literature, letters, comedy and news relevant to current affairs.

The Aug. 23 show will feature Michael Cerveris, Mario Cantone, Tovah Feldshuh, Queen Esther, Mark Rosenthal and Ron Simons. Marian Seldes and Brian Murray will appear at the Aug. 30 show.

Voices is produced by The Worth Street Theater Company (Carol R. Fineman and Vern T. Calhoun, producers) in association with Simon/Herzog Productions.

The theatre is located at 136 E. 13th Street.
